Coherent Particle Structures in High-Prandtl-Number Liquid Bridges

چکیده

Abstract Clustering of small rigid spherical particles into particle accumulation structures (PAS) is studied numerically for a high-Prandtl-number (Pr = 68) thermocapillary liquid bridge. The one-way-coupling approach used calculation the motion, modeling PAS as an attractor single particle. created by dissipative forces acting on near boundary due to finite size These can dramatically deflect trajectory from fluid pathline and transfer it certain tubular flow structures, called Kolmogorov–Arnold–Moser (KAM) tori, in which focused might not escape anymore. take place if KAM torus, property without particles, enters narrow layer boundaries experiences extra forces. Since obtained this system depends mainly size, be classified finite-size coherent structure (FSCS).

Understanding Particle Accumulation Structures (PAS) in Thermocapillary Liquid Bridges

Particle accumulation structures (PAS) in liquid bridges are considered in a didactic approach. After reviewing the experimental results on PAS we explain PAS as a limit cycle of the particle motion in the frame of reference co-rotating with the hydrothermal wave. The limit cycles representing PAS are created by perturbations of the motion of perfect tracer particles. Therefore, the topology of...

A linear stability analysis of large-Prandtl-number thermocapillary liquid bridges

A linear stability analysis is applied to determine the onset of oscillatory thermocapillary convection in cylindrical liquid bridges of large Prandtl numbers (4 6 Pr 6 50). We focus on the relationships between the critical Reynolds number Rec, the azimuthal wave number m, the aspect ratio Γ and the Prandtl number Pr. A detailed Rec-Pr stability diagram is given for liquid bridges with various...

Canonical exact coherent structures embedded in high Reynolds number flows.

The applications and implications of two recently addressed asymptotic descriptions of exact coherent structures in shear flows are discussed. The first type of asymptotic framework to be discussed was introduced in a series of papers by Hall & Smith in the 1990s and was referred to as vortex-wave interaction theory (VWI). New results are given here for the canonical VWI problem in an infinite ...

Effect of the Prandtl number on the onset of turbulence in liquid 4He

2014 We have performed experiments on the onset of turbulence in liquid 4He, as a function of the Prandtl number (0.4 Pr 0.8), for a series of cells of confined geometry with two convective rolls. For a low value of Pr the dynamic behaviour is similar to our previous studies, i.e. two frequencies followed by lock-in and subharmonic bifurcations of the lowest frequency, before the onset of turbu...

Lagrangian coherent structures in low Reynolds number swimming.

This work explores the utility of the finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE) field for revealing flow structures in low Reynolds number biological locomotion. Previous studies of high Reynolds number unsteady flows have demonstrated that ridges of the FTLE field coincide with transport barriers within the flow, which are not shown by a more classical quantity such as vorticity. In low Reynolds nu...
